Dark Skies Of Lake City

Lake City, Colorado

A few months ago I had the idea to turn some street lights off in Lake City to be able to photograph the Milky Way from downtown. A few months after that, I mentioned it to someone who was willing to actually act and go to town meetings to ask the town if they would turn the lights off for a night. They agreed and were enthusiastic back in the Spring! We planned a star party for the Perseid Meteor shower and hoped for clear skies.⁣ ⁣ We got clear skies! Unfortunately, the star party was a bit muted/informal/unadvertised due to the virus and not being able to have a lot of people there, but more came than I expected, and they were treated to, even downtown, some of the darkest skies left in the United States! Phillip Virden gave a great talk about the stars, importance of dark skies, and set the telescope up on Jupiter and Saturn, while several meteors shot through the star filled sky!⁣ ⁣ After everyone else went home, I set out to get the shot I imagined, but unfortunately, we had forgotten to add a few street lights to the list, and their lights still shone out into the night. With the naked eye the view was great, but through the camera’s lens, the street lights on the opposite streets were overpowering. With a little improvising and trial/error in camera placement, plus a jacket draped over the atm light (another light we hadn’t noticed) I was able to get the photo!⁣ ⁣.
