Wetterhorn and Matterhorn at Sunrise

A friend of a friend of mine was celebrating a birthday, and I convinced them Uncompaghre Peak was the only mountain for the occasion! We camped at the trailhead the night before, and set the alarm for 3:15am, and after the second backup alarm at 3:25 the hike began! Aided by starlight and our headlamps we followed my favorite trail always upwards towards the mountain. Once through the trees, and the expectation of glowing mountain lions eyes faded the hike was so pleasant. Meteors streaked through the sky, there were no sounds but those of the wind or the small streams we passed by. The light gradually increased, as did the wind, all the while we gained elevation with each step. 2 hours of hiking in at 6:30 the headlamps were no longer needed and we could tell the stage was set for an incredible San Juan sunrise. We scrambled up the scrambly bit of the hike, just as the scattered high clouds in the south western sky lit up in the most vibrant pinks. In complete awe we summited just at sunrise. Just to be there and feel the wind, cold, and see it all unfold beneath you as the light hits the tops the peaks. It’s just something you can’t capture the beauty or feelings of in words, or even photos. We found a barrier of rocks to hide behind, donned party hats to celebrate! The wind continued to pick up, and while I would’ve been content to stay up there all day I didn’t complain or stay longer when my hiking companions decided to head down. Instead, already thinking about my next trip above tree line,.
