It snowed about 8 inches one night so I did what I always do, wake before sunrise and go look for animals! I got a little distracted by the scenery and didn’t get to where I wanted to be until about 8am. Right when my friends happened to pop out of the woods with news that they had seen the moose I had come to see. They said he was moving towards the forest, but if I hurried I might be able to see him before he vanished into the woods. So off into the snow I hurried! I found them maybe 30 minutes after they left him, but I was greeted to a vastly different moose than they had left! His antlers were bloody, and the velvet was being shed fast! When they had left him he was still in full velvet. Now he was play jousting with a friend (whose velvet had been shed already), and you could tell he was in some discomfort! He never would commit fully to the jousting as I think his antlers were still sensitive, having the skin there. He was doing his best removing that though, because in between rounds he raked his antlers through every bush in sight trying desperately to get that velvet off! Unfortunately, though the moose moved into the open meadow, and just behind a rise so I could no longer see them. Making a new plan that didn’t involve walking around open meadows with an unseen agitated bull moose, I went back, found my human friends, and we hiked in again this time on the left side of the field. That’s where we saw them jousting again! The one who had shed his velvet seemed cool and was just doing normal moose stuff (eating/nothing) while the other guy was even more annoyed by his antlers now. He was making progress removing the velvet though! He would thrash his head around, rake the bushes, and at one point lifted his head up and grabbed the skin with his mouth, and ate it! After nearly 30 minutes, he did that thing moose do when they want to go somewhere, but someone else is occupying the ground they want. They stare at you until you get the mes.
