It’s been a year since I’ve seen my favorite Moose. He had always been my favorite, and friendliest, but he’s also the one I know the most, by far. I first saw him in 2011, and I think he was around 14 years old last year. I spent countless hours with him, especially over the past few years. So much so the forest seems empty now. I had definitely stopped looking for moose and always went looking for him. He came into summer of 2019 healing from some type of injury that left him very thin, limping, with a damaged ear, and possibly blind in one eye. When I saw him that year, I didn’t even recognize him. Despite that he got through summer, got fat, very surprisingly made it through the winter. In 2020 he still had the same ailments, but had seemed to rebound some. I saw him many times that summer, and his age was showing. Finally, August 26th was the best encounter I’d had ever had with him, it was also the final. I saw him before sunrise, parked myself near the path/direction he usually takes, and waited. Over the next hour he came closer and closer. My zoom became too much, and I just watched him. I’d never been that close to a moose. He looked at me maybe twice the entire time. That’s one of the reasons I liked him. Once he trusted you, he’d forget you were there, and just do normal moose stuff. Once the sun finally came over a hill, and it started to get warm he continued on into the trees just like I’d seen him do so many times before, pausing only for a second in between the shadows. Now summer is almost over and he’s still not been seen, so unfortunately it looks like this last winter was too long. I can’t say I expected to see him again, but I had hoped. I’m definitely going to miss him, but I’m so grateful for the many hours spent with him throughout these past summers.
