The Guard

A ferocious baby mountain lion guarding it’s mom’s kill. After I saw the lions in the field, it took some careful repositioning to find a spot where I could see them and also not bother them. After I found that spot, the Mom had already finished breakfast and had headed off somewhere. Slightly concerned, not knowing just exactly where she was, I stood there watching one cub on the elk, while the other was surveying everything from another stand of trees. It eventually crossed the meadow and joined where I assumed/hoped/believed mom was. This was the only time I saw them together and, unfortunately, wasn’t able to get any good photos. The other cub stayed and ate on the elk for some time. After it had eaten its fill and grew sleepy, it just sat half asleep on the kill. As it’s activity lessened the scavengers grew bolder and bolder.
