Two years ago, this was the first hike I attempted after moving back to Colorado. I wanted to see the waterfall which is just over 2 miles into the hike, all uphill of course. At the time I was just barely recovering from Lyme disease which had left me unable to walk from December to February. I was in horrific shape, and I had terrible and constant knee pain from a torn meniscus/infection. In the end, I made it 3.2 miles, 950ft up in four agonizing hours.⠀ ⠀ Beginning in February 2019, I began really making an effort to get in better shape, and redid the hike just under a year later. I made it to the waterfall goal, but it was still a lot tougher than I felt it should be. 4.4 miles, 1,600ft.⠀ ⠀ Fast forward to last week. After awhile of asking just about everyone I met if they wanted to go backpacking somewhere, sometime, someone finally took me up on it, and suggested this as a destination. I finally removed the price tags from the pile of brand new backpacking gear that I had impulse bought over the winter, and headed out.⠀ ⠀ This time, the hiking was so much easier than last year, despite a shockingly heavy pack, but an equally shockingly lower base weight. I don’t bother to keep up with mileage or time anymore, but it was so much more enjoyable, and in what felt like no time I was knee deep crossing the creek at the falls. After a break to talk to some other hikers, (who ended up stopping by my gallery!) camp was set up, healthy snack of a maple doughnut was eaten, and we continued up the trail.⠀ ⠀ At about 11,800 ft, we were turned back by 5 foot snowdrifts, and another high creek crossing. Maybe this summer I’ll get to the lake at the top and the Divide beyond that, but for now swipe to see what I did see on this short trip. The entire area is just incredible, even though it’s been changed by the spruce beetle, it will always remain one of my favorite areas. Anyway, this is a photo of Sunshine Peak lit up by golden hour light.
