Not Ready For Snow

It’s about time to say goodbye to the Mountain Bluebirds for the winter. They are by far my favorite bird so I wanted to make sure to spend some time with them before they migrate on to lower altitudes this winter, and that I did! The morning after the snow I noticed the telltale neon blue flash of one as I was driving by a meadow so I pulled over and walked out into the snow where there was a flock of about 20 flying around, or just looking disgruntled from the snow. At first they scattered, but thankfully, I was dressed like them in my brand new, bright blue fleece so they came back quickly and resumed their morning activities! They were in constant motion moving from perch to perch swooping down on whatever insect they could. They were just so much fun to watch, so that’s what I did for about 30 minutes even though I was already late opening my gallery (sorry, not sorry). They flew and landed just feet from me. The first time I’ve met semi cooperative birds, even though they still only stayed perched for seconds and flew off if approached/moved. It was so much fun, but when my hands began to get numb from cold, and I got unreasonably muddy after they moved from the meadow to the roadside, I decided to leave them. In retrospect, it was a bad decision as I was making some friends, and I’d definitely would like to tag along with them on their migration this year and skip the -20 temps, snow, isolation, and cabin fever they deftly avoid, but which I usually charge straight into like the light brigade of old!
