North Face Sunrise

The Lake City hiking group was planning a day hike on this trail, and so I decided to plan a mini thru hike, with plans to be picked up 14-ish miles away. The plan, follow the creek up the valley through the Uncompahgre Wilderness, spend the night, and then climb over the ridge, and hike to the road a mile from that. ⠀ ⠀ We met at the bank, and hiked with the group to where they ate lunch 4 miles in at the first water crossing. Then a friend and I continued on. Six miles and three more water crossings later the valley opened up, and Uncompahgre Peak all of a sudden appeared. By this point the weather had turned and the sky filled with some truly ominous clouds and an incredible sound of echoing thunder cracked through the mountain valley.⠀ ⠀ Thankfully, it all avoided us, and the night cleared up nicely, and when my 5 am alarm sounded, I reluctantly left the warmth of my quilt behind and ventured the 50 steps to this vantage point. I was greeted by an Uncompahgre Peak lit up in a strong alpenglow thirty minutes before sunrise. I can’t say how incredible it was to wake up in this meadow. The stillness of the meadow, the sound of hundreds of birds calling out in the soft blueish dawn light, but mostly just to feel like you’re in a different world with nature untouched by us. Not only to know this happens every single day, but just to know how lucky you are to witness it in it’s truest form for a few hours.⠀ ⠀ As the sun rose to warm the entire valley and my now numb hands, we packed up camp, headed over the ridge, and ended up on the Uncompahgre Peak trail. After following that, we began walking down the road. Four miles later at the junction of Engineer Pass, the first car that passed, picked us up, and dropped us off at my gallery in Lake City.
