It had rained pretty much all week with 100% cloud cover, but one night it looked like it was starting to clear around sunset. I grabbed my camera and went looking for the comet. After photographing that for awhile, I was driving home when I noticed the stillness of the lake! Immediately the thoughts of bed and sleep vanished, and I was walking down the road in complete darkness. After picking a spot, I scrambled down to the shoreline, in the process frightening a deer who just happened to be sleeping by the bush I wanted to be photographing near. After we both scared each other, and once we figured out we weren’t a bear or mountain lion. She went back to sleep, and I got my camera set up. After the first few test shots for focus, I was just completely awestruck by the stillness of the water and the brightness of the stars. I know I’m spoiled by Lake City’s dark skies, but to see the stars effectively doubled was something else. Jupiter and Saturn were just as bright in the water as they were in the sky. Overhead the clouds continually formed and dissipated, but they kept their action to the mountainsides while above me was 100% clear, and there was absolutely no wind. Conditions which I had never seen before. I stood there taking photos for about thirty minutes and just admiring the scene as it was, but then the clouds began forming overhead and sweeping in from the west, and where stars were, now was just black. Where the universe was reflected now, gentle waves lapped at the shore as the wind picked up. On the way home the rain began again, and I was thankful to have a dry bed waiting, but on the other hand the deer has this view anytime she wants!
