Learning to Hunt

Colorado

After the mother Lion and one of the cubs had gone back to rest in the trees, this cub stayed to eat some more and guard the kill. I watched him do this for the next 3 hours! After breakfast, he just sat contemplating the world for a bit, and the magpies grew bold. They were really timid at first and beyond skittish--not landing or flying away at movement, as he guarded the kill with a ferocious passion. After a while, he developed a game to play with them. He would retreat off the kill maybe 20 yards, then let the magpies come in, and then he’d stalk them. He would take careful, slow steps back, and then a quick run and baby pounce at them as they flew off. I watched him do this probably 20 times. At one point, he called out to the trees for reinforcements from mom and the other cub, but they didn’t come, so it was up to him. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t trying to catch them (or he was just wildly unsuccessful) but rather just playing with them, and took great joy in letting them come close only to scare them off and make them caw out in fear. It was really entertaining either way. As time went on, it was obvious he was overwhelmed and outnumbered so he gave up and accepted their cawing presence. He’d stare at them, lazily swat at one occasionally, but for the most part, they shared the elk as he lay there with them swarming. Finally, he walked away from the kill, took a quick look and a few steps back to scare the magpies again, but ended up finally following his family into the trees.
