If you know me, you’ll know I love wolves more than any animal by far. This pretty much comes from the time I visited Yellowstone when I was around 12 and some guy in the Lamar Valley let me look through his spotting scope to see some wolf pups playing with each other. Years later, I began the whole photography thing, and I’ve always wanted to photograph a wild wolf. I’ve seen several wolves in all but two of my Yellowstone trips since then, but always from an absurd distance. I’ve had incredible encounters with about every animal native to the Rockies, except them. It just hasn’t worked out. Finally, that changed! (Sort of, not really, but I’ll get close someday soon!) I was watching the Junction Butte pack at twilight when one of the younger black wolves left the pack. It was up to something, and that something was walking towards me! It was still hundreds of yards off, but it was coming closer as the light disappeared. Finally, it paused on the banks of the Lamar River and then crossed! It was just such a pleasure to watch these guys a few days ago, and especially to return the favor and show as many people as possible the 3 pups playing by their hillside den, with my camera live view, as possible!
