Uncompahgre Stars

I started my first Uncompahgre climb at 6:11 am, but the second I was done all I wanted to do was go back up! So for the full moon Friday night, I started the hike at 6:13 pm! Although the summit wasn’t the goal this time, the destination was a ridge to get a view of the moon lighting up Uncompahgre as it rose in the east! I reached my destination just as the sun began to set and the sky turned a truly incredible purple. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Slowly the light faded, the darkness, and my doubts about standing on a high ridge miles from the road/help surrounded me. Then the faint glow in the east became stronger and stronger until the moon slowly rose! In minutes the entire valley and Uncompahgre were bathed in the light of the full moon and headlamps were no longer needed! Thankfully, the wind stayed mercifully mild keeping the cold in moderation so it was an enjoyable stay on this ridge during this hour long exposure. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After that the wind kicked up and the cold was no longer moderate, so I hiked back the way I had come, only to be greeted with several pair of reflected green eyes along the way. They were most likely deer/coyotes, but considering mountain lions had been on my mind since I began the hike 6 hours earlier I was convinced otherwise. Whatever it was didn’t pay half the attention to me as I did it, so I made it home without being mauled, and my desire to climb again and again remained intact!
