I’m very happy to report that I recently spotted the twin moose calves that were orphaned last year after their Mom, Moose 163, was illegally killed by a hunter in October. The twins were last seen the day after, and to my knowledge hadn’t been seen since. Since then, I’ve received a few messages a week asking about their well-being, and I’m so happy to finally be able to respond. They drank from a pond, ate some willow, and spent most of their time in the forest, so what I’m saying is they seemed healthy and normal! Obviously, they are still together, never being more than 20 feet apart, usually a lot closer. If their mom was still with them, the three would separate in the next few weeks so the biggest fear for them will be human interaction/interference with their lives. So, if you see them (or any animal) use great discretion with their locations, and don’t bother them. I always do my absolute best to make sure the animals I photograph aren’t stressed, and if I feel they are, I leave. My photos (and yours) aren’t worth risking the well being of any animal. It’s incredibly obvious to tell when a moose is stressed, and you can keep them calm by watching from a safe distance, maintaining that distance if they approach by backing up, staying quiet, not using a drone to photograph them, and not chasing them in your vehicle. Seriously, I feel like these are very basic practices and should be commonplace when wildlife watching, but from experiences in the past year, they aren’t.
