Lone Eagle Sunset

Colorado

I first saw a photo of this mountain around 2009 when my brand new Nikon d90 was on full auto roaming around abandoned asylums with me somewhere in the woods of Massachusetts. Instantly, I fell in love and wanted to go there. Problem(s). It’s an 8 mile (one way) hike in. Also I lived 2000 miles from it. This wasn’t an attainable goal for this fat city kid who had gone on maybe one hike in his entire life, to say the least. So it got filed away under the maybe I’ll do that someday to do list. Years passed and those old Kirkbride buildings were abandoned again with my move back to Colorado. The d90 was replaced, and I learned to use a camera. Most importantly I grew to love nature and the mountains. Still the hike wasn’t attainable for this fat mountain man so, while not forgotten, it was forgotten about. A few more years passed. Some stuff happened, and after another long needed move to Colorado, I got my act together! Started hiking, and then backpacking! All of a sudden this was attainable, well kinda. Didn’t get a permit for that summer. No problem, I made a friend who happened to have a permit for early September. I somehow managed to get the invite. It was happening! We planned and packed for the trip, and then...called it off the day before. It ended up snowing a foot. Good decision? I guess. Turns out there was a better option! My friend managed to get a last minute permit, and we spent 2 nights at this lake last week! Dream come true. Anyway, this is a whole lot of words to say this a photo of Lone Eagle Peak with a touch of alpenglow, and a moody sky that made good on its threat to rain just as the sun set.
