Handies Trail Sunset

Lake City, Colorado

Business in my gallery was pretty slow, and my friend who was up for the weekend suggested we hike Handies that night to avoid doing it when crowds might appear. Not exactly a hard sell to me, so a few minutes later, the closed sign went up early, and we were on the road to the trailhead. An adventure in itself any other day.⠀ ⠀ The basin was already in shadow when we started, but we quickly caught up to the growing shadows. Marmots and pikas guided us up the empty trail where the only other people were friends (@cabinfevermerclakecity) who unbeknownst to me were on the way down celebrating a birthday and their first 14er! After them, it was just us racing the sun. We really had to pick up the pace about midway as the sun was setting fast, and we still had a lot of elevation to gain. Confidence waned, and we contemplated turning back, but once we reached the saddle, the light was absolutely incredible. It was so vivid and warm, but we had no time to notice since this is where the grade goes from moderate to straight up. The thought of turning back had been forgotten! From here, it was a race with no more rest stops, and it ended up being a true photo finish to see if we would make the sunset.⠀ ⠀ We ended up reaching the summit just seconds before the sun disappeared behind the mountains. The weather was pretty ideal at the top with only a slight breeze, and the sky was nicely clearing itself of the few remaining clouds. That said, the temperature was dropping as fast as the sun, so we just enjoyed the last of the alpenglow and the incredible 360 degree views of the San Juans while we donned warmer clothes to prepare for the descent. ⠀ ⠀ So it was headlamps on until a nice comfy rock presented itself. So it was headlamps off, and time for some stargazing before the moon rose.
