The elusive, tall, silent, crepuscular, awkward resident of the mountains. While yes, that all applies to me as well, I’m talking about the largest member of the Cervidae (deer) family here. Shiras moose are what we have in the lower 48 and what was reintroduced to Southwest Colorado in the 1990s, Yukon Moose are a different, bigger sub-species. You’ll find both below.
They became my favorite animal after several chance and fun encounters which led to thousands of sightings and hours spent out in the wild together across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. While they have a reputation for tempers, I’ve found them and my preferred method of photography mix well. That being: I find a moose, sit down somewhere it can see me, wait, be quiet, and see what happens. Usually not all that much, besides some anthropomorphizing on my part. Sometimes, as you’ll see below, these guys can look pretty majestic.
